"The Death of the Rebel" is an allegory about a single tree that defies the forest's tradition of growing down into the stagnant swamp. Ignoring the warnings and mockery of the other trees, it struggles upward to reach the mountain peak. Though it reaches the summit, it is struck by lightning and burns, preferring a magnificent death on the heights to a long, stagnant life below.
