The Deserted Woman
“The Abandoned Woman” is a 1832 novella by French writer Honore de Balzac. The vicomtesse de Beauseant, whom readers of Balzac will recognize from “Father Goriot” where she led a typical Parisian life, moves to a castle to live in seclusion after an unfortunate love story that ends with her abandonment. But she will find love again in the person of M. le Baron Gaston de Nueil, a young Parisian, who has been sent away from Paris to recover from an inflammatory disease.
