The actions of Jack London's story "The Curious Fragment" take place in the second half of the twenty-sixth century AD. For five centuries, the world has been ruled by an industrial oligarchy that grew up on the ruins of the former Republic. The work is about how slave workers (at the time slavery  was practiced in full force) were able to achieve justice from their master, the industrial oligarch Roger Vanderwater.
