Smoke

"Smoke" is a novel by Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev, first published in 1867.

The novel is set in Baden-Baden, in the European spa town. The main character, Grigory Mikhailovich Litvinov, returns from abroad to marry Tatyana Shestova, his fiancée. However, a meeting with Irina, the woman he loved in his youth and who is now married to a powerful official, forces Litvinov to reconsider his plans and feelings.

The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, disappointment and political ideals, using the metaphor of smoke to denote the illusory nature of feelings and social aspirations. Turgenev masterfully describes the inner experiences of the characters, creating vivid and deep images.
