The Moonstone
Wilkie Collins's novel “The Moonstone”, published in 1868, is considered a prototype of the modern detective novel. The story centers around the theft of a precious Indian diamond, the Moonstone, which is given to Rachel Verinder on her eighteenth birthday and mysteriously disappears that same night.
