Ball of Fat
“Boule de Suif” (often translated as “Ball of Fat”) by Guy de Maupassant centers on a group of French citizens from various social classes who attempt to escape war-torn Rouen by traveling together in a stagecoach to Le Havre. Among them is Boule de Suif, a prostitute named Elisabeth Rousset, whose generosity contrasts starkly with the self-interest of her fellow passengers, including bourgeois couples, an aristocratic pair, a Democrat, and two nuns. When a Prussian officer halts their journey, demanding that Boule de Suif grant him favors for the group to continue, her initial refusal is met with pressure and eventual betrayal by the others. Through this tense journey, Maupassant critiques the hypocrisy, moral double standards, and class prejudices that surface in desperate situations, revealing the darker sides of human nature.
