On a rural parsonage farm in Nordland, near a sea current and an old cemetery, childhood passes in hard work and solitude. A tooth taken from the cemetery binds the boy to a mysterious red-bearded ghost whose appearances intrude upon his daily life for years. Through recollections, the story reveals the influence of fear on a child’s inner world, as well as how a terrifying ordeal teaches him to stand firm and take heart.
