In the rural American South, from the Civil War years through the decades that followed, Eliza recounts her long life to her son. Her memories intertwine scenes of childhood, family joys and losses, hard work, and her complicated relationship with her husband. In the old woman’s words, the past retains its sounds, scents, and colors, while the land remains a symbol of the strength to go on living and of home. She urges her son, who lives in a distant city, to return to his native places.
