Mkrtich Armen's "The Night of the Old Year" depicts the miraculous yet tragic return of the imprisoned artist Ivan Agatov to Moscow on New Year's Eve. There, he discovers his wife dancing in his apartment with his interrogator, who has convinced her that Ivan is a traitor. Stripped of his freedom and his entire life, Ivan deliberately chooses to return to the camp's reality, where he is found frozen solid outside the gates the next morning.
