“Vardanank” is a historical novel by Derenik Demirchyan. It is one of the notable works of Armenian literature. The novel was written during the years of World War II to sustain the fighting spirit of Armenian soldiers at the front. In the book, the author portrays Armenia in the 5th century, mainly recounting the events of the year 451, when the Armenian people, led by the sparapet Vardan Mamikonian, rose in rebellion and fought heroically on the field of Avarayr against the Persians, who, having conquered Armenia, sought to impose their faith on the Armenian people.
