The late 1890s, in a rapidly developing industrial city of the Caucasus. The seemingly secure life of the wealthy Frangulyan merchant family is challenged by changing economic conditions. Athanes’s traditional outlook is opposed by the ambitious and enterprising Aramazd. Against a background of family tensions, love, and financial interests, an older mercantile world confronts the demands of a new era.
