The events unfold in a large provincial city at the beginning of the twentieth century, among the prosperous Armenian intelligentsia. Young Yevgine is married to the respected lawyer Mihran Alaverdyan, yet a growing inner unease begins to disturb the calm order of their home. The story explores trust, honesty in marriage, public judgment, and the unequal moral expectations placed on men and women.
