The Caucasus, at the beginning of the twentieth century. In a prosperous Armenian family, conflicting ideas about marriage, duty, and a woman’s independence come to the surface. Young Hersile increasingly feels the distance between her own aspirations and the role imposed on her by her husband and society. Conversations with relatives and friends lead her to question how personal freedom can coexist with moral responsibility toward others.
