Volume VIII of the scholarly edition "Armenian Folk Tales" includes the tales from the settlements of the Gugark province of Greater Armenia, in historical Armenia (present-day Tumanyan, Gugark, Stepanavan, and partially Spitak and Noyemberyan, as well as the Marneuli and Bolnisi districts of the former Georgian SSR).
The volume contains 139 tales, of which only 17 have been previously published; the remaining 129 are unpublished manuscripts. The overwhelming majority of the material in this volume was recorded in the villages of Lori by the distinguished ethnographer Yer. Lalayan — both by himself and by participants of the notable 1915–1916 folklore expedition he led.
