Begging is a mask that often hides the inner tragedy beneath it. The protagonist of the story is a migrant who, due to unemployment, is forced to engage in begging. No one knows anything about his past, so those around him treat him either with indifference or with pity.
The migrant, having lost his birthplace, home, and possessions, has a mechanism to cope with humiliation—cynicism, which was by no means characteristic of his previous life. It is precisely in this environment of adversity that the events unfold, which in the story are depicted with both humorous and tragic overtones.
