"The Field" follows an old peasant who walks out after a severe overnight rainstorm to check on his wheat field. As he and the narrator pass other fields, some are damaged while others are fine, but upon reaching his own plot, they discover it has been completely "swept away" by the flood. The story ends with the powerful image of the old man collapsing in silent despair by his ruined field, sitting motionless in the rain.
