Greece is living through the harsh years of fascist occupation. A chance encounter between an orphaned boy, left alone and hungry on the streets of Athens, and the protagonist— a man who shuns his human responsibilities— develops into a profound drama of conscience and moral choice. The protagonist, seeking to justify his own selfishness through ideas of collective struggle, is ultimately forced to confront his own inner emptiness and the irreversible consequences of what has happened.
