The story unfolds in Erzurum in the late 19th century, at a time when poverty and the loss of property are reshaping people’s social standing and relationships. At its center are Nerses-akhpar, a formerly well-to-do man who has fallen into need, and his neighbor, Nikoghos-agha. Their relationship reveals differing notions of charity and gratitude, as well as the point at which helping others becomes a means of self-affirmation.
