The story takes place in nineteenth-century provincial Russia, on a riverbank where Ivan Ivanovich Lapkin and Anna Semyonovna are relaxing. Anna’s younger brother, Kolya, is there to witness their secret meeting. The adults’ romantic intimacy becomes a source of curiosity and mischief for the boy. With humor, the story portrays the lovers’ unease, the child’s cunning, and the way a small intrusion disturbs their peace.
